The API system involves the interchange of data in advance from flight information to passport information between the computer system of the airline of origin state and the computer system of the destination state. The data can include information on passengers, crew, and transit travelers. Then the information is checked against warning lists and used for immigration, customer and security purposes.
The benefits of the API System are two main ones: One, is that it brings faster passenger processing upon arrival. Since they have already been processed before the arrival, they have hardly time to waste upon arriving at the border.
The other main objective of this is to provide an advance warning of suspected or improperly documented individuals traveling into the country, enhancing border security and providing more thorough checkout.
Passengers who refuse to cooperate in giving their information will not be allowed entry into these countries and will not be allowed to travel.
API Systems can be installed as a batch model or an online model. Depending on the country’s economical situation, business directions and available resources will determine what kind of API they decide to install.
The batch model works by sending a list of the passengers to the destination when it has departed, and is checked in the destination country on the alert list before the flight arrives.
This model provides a warning to the destination but since it does not return a message to the airline, it cannot prevent a suspected passenger from boarding.
Then there is the online model, meaning that the data is forwarded electronically to the destination message based, and the message can either be interactive or non-interactive.
The interactive model, also known as APP- Advanced Passenger Processing , consists of the passenger’s information being collected at the time of check in and being immediately sent to border control agencies. There the information, visa, and passport are examined, checked against warning alerts, and the passenger is given permission whether to board the plane or not. .
In a non-interactive API system, the data is sent when the flight departs to their destination and arrives before they land. The data is then rechecked when the passenger arrives, and if there are any doubts can be submitted to a second examination as they arrive.
