Control tower equipments are responsible
for the movement around the airport, and
is also the building which the operations
are performed from. In an airport, the
permanent control towers usually riser
higher than any other buildings in order
to give air traffic controllers a view
of the aircraft that is in motion in the
air or on the ground. Full control tower
structures usually have windows that surround
the entire second floor in order for there
to be a complete view all around. The
ceiling is usually painted black and the
windows are tilted outwards in order for
the outside to be seen fully without the
reflection of the machines in the back.
Control Tower Equipments Contain:
• radios for communication with
aircraft, that are linked to headsets,
microphones or speakers.
• a telephone system that connects
voice lines with public telephone lines
via quick-dial systems to controllers'
headsets, in order for controllers to
talk to outside parties
• a strip board permitting Flight
Progress Strips to be used (computerized
systems though have replaced these in
some towers)
• in the situation of radio failure,
a light gun for communication with aircraft
via aviation light signals
• wind and pressure gauges
Optional equipment includes the following:
• A small radar display, an Aerodome
Traffic Monitor, that allows controllers
to see the aircraft flying in the airport’s
surrounding area.
• A Surface Movement Radar to display
aircrafts and vehicles at night and in
poor visibility
• Meteorological information, briefing
systems, and flight.
