The Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition is a type of software application program for program control that gathers data in real time from distant locations in order to gain control of equipment and conditions.  It is used for example in Municipal water supply systems to control and observe chemical or transport processes, to control electric power generation, transmission and distribution, gas and oil pipelines, and other distributed processes.

SCADA systems have usually used combinations of radio and direct serial or modern connections to meet the requirements of communications. Their systems include software and hardware machinery. The hardware feeds the computer data that has SCADA software installed.  The data is then processed and presented in a timely manner.  The data is recorded, logged in, and stored on a hard disk and sent to a printer. When conditions become risky, SCADA sets off a warning by sounding off an alarm.

SCADA systems have contributed over the years in the progress of functionality, scalability, performance, and openness.  They are now thought as an alternative in house development, even for the most required control systems. Also, SCADA systems are not only used for the industrial purpose but also in nuclear fusion experiments.

 The hardware for SCADA is generally able to withstand any temperature, vibration and voltage extremes. It’s reliability is enhanced by having rebundant hardware and communication channels. The failing part of the hardware can be easily identified and it’s function is automatically taken over by a back up hardware.
