Almost all Metal Detectors are composed based on a pulse induction. They are a collection of wires that act as the transmitter and receiver. If a metal passes through the metal detector, the pulse creates an opposite magnetic field in the object. This system will detect an unidentified or dangerous object as it goes through the system

To know there is a metal object interfering, there is a test circuit in the metal detector to examine the length of the reflected pulse. If the decay of the reflected pulse takes more that a few microseconds, then there is a metal object interfering.
